My personal contribution to the raffle is a very special one-of-a-kind ceramic platter signed by Alice Waters. Yes, THE Alice Waters people!

This platter was donated by Waters as an auction item to Women of Taste, the food and wine fundraiser for Girls Inc. education programs. As the lucky recipient of the platter I felt that it would be awesome to see it continue to do good in the world. The platter is eleven inches in diameter with Alice’s signature in a raised orange gold glaze. It’s in pristine condition and would make an awesome holiday gift or collectible for any food lover. If you ever thought of chucking your day job to start your own restaurant, you’re not alone. I happen to know a very entrepreneurial lady named Flo who did just that. Errr, okay…so Flo is actually a cartoon, and her restaurant is really part of a game. The cool thing is that you can jump in and help Flo keep the food flowing.

I’m totally addicted to this fast paced game so I offered my friends at Playfirst a chance to promote the new sequel Diner Dash 2: Restaurant Rescue on Kung Foodie. It’s really a blast and you can download the game with 60 minutes of free demo time.There are several themed restaurants that will test your skills, including a hip Japanese spot where you can serve up edamame to keep your patrons happy.

The premise of original Diner Dash game is that you help Flo build her restaurant empire. Her only employee is her cook, so she does everything else. Flo seats the customers, takes their orders, brings the food, picks up the check and cleans the tables. To get extra bonus points you can serve up hot breadsticks and coffee, or match customers to the same colored seats.

Be careful! If you make people wait too long they’ll get mad…and maybe even ditch the bill. There’s nothing like having a line of business women, senior citizens, and college kids frowning at you.

In Diner Dash 2 Flo goes out to help other restaurant owners. A greedy Tycoon named Mr. Big is threatening to demolish four picturesque eateries in order to build a mall. Flo is out to help boost her friends eateries so they can beat Mr. Big. It’s a great game that has a cool ending. Playfirst even named one of Flo’s friends after San Francisco diner owner Darla Kubala.

While I loved the orginal game Diner Dash, I enjoyed Diner Dash 2 even more….and if you’ve got kids in the house Playfirst even has a Spong Bob Squarepants version!

Looks like the Japanese diamond dessert squad has started a trend.

Round 1
December: A department store in Tokyo put a $1.7m fruitcake on sale. Covered in 223 diamonds, the cake took six months of planning and one month create. I’m left wondering where a pastry chef would apply for a loan to purchase the gems, and does one need special insurance in case the buyer accidentally ingests the decorative sparklies? No mention if the cake actually sold.

Round 2
January: Not to be outdone, a Tokyo jeweler makes his power move by creating a chocolate bar that would put Willy Wonka to shame. Said to be worth 500 million Yen, the bar is artfully decorated with 2006 diamonds and carved into the shape of Africa; one of the world’s largest producers of diamonds. Clearly this guy wasn’t letting a mere pastry chef take away his food lover title.

Secret underdog contender, Koo-ki Sushi!

I had to give it up to these California based Japanese ladies who’ve been making amazingly realistic chocolate and cookie based sushi for years. I mean come on…apricot gummi salmon roe? Green tea wasabi on rice cookies? A special fish bottle of shoyu chocolate sauce?

Every foodie girl knows that kind of sushi beats out diamonds any day.
